Small Changes to Make Big Energy Savings
The key to long term energy savings is to make small changes in the way we use and consume energy. We do not need to drastically overhaul our lives in order to save energy and money, but instead incorporate modest changes that we can be consistent with.
In order to save and preserve energy, there are changes we have to make to our homes. We are all well aware of the larger changes that are recommended such as insulating your home, switching to a sustainable form of energy, keeping heating systems updated and maintained, etc. But there are countless small, easy changes that will not impact your daily life but will make a massive difference to your energy consumption.
Make the Switch to Rechargeable Batteries
Many devices are now built to take rechargeable batteries. Not only are they more energy efficient but they are also more cost-effective than traditional batteries as you don’t need to buy replacements when they run out. It also minimises the amount of waste produced by battery use. When charging the reusable batteries avoid overcharging them or leaving them plugged into the charging device longer than necessary.
Don’t Forget about the Fridge
While many people have switched to A-Rated dry cleaners, washing machines, and other home appliances, many people often forget about their fridge. In order to maximise its efficiency and save energy make sure to defrost your fridge and freezer at least once every six months. Regularly check that all the rubber seals are still resistant and tight by checking if they can hold a folded sheet of paper in place when closed. You should also let food cool to room temperature before placing it in the fridge or freezer.
Be Smart with your Computer
Always turn your computer off when not in use. Leaving the desktop and screen on, or in standby, still consumes unnecessary energy. Screen savers do not save energy so turn the system off fully. If you can, switch to a laptop device. Laptops use up to 90% less energy than computers. If you have a laptop then make sure you only charge it for as long as is necessary, and unplug the charger once the battery is full.
